BRADFORD — Todd Buckwold earned his first Bear Ridge Speedway win of the season on Saturday night.

The Canaan, N.H. driver slipped to the inside of race leader Mike Ryan on lap 31 during the 40-lap Sabil & Sons DIRTcar Sportsman Modified Walker Motor Sales John Poor Memorial feature event when Ryan drifted wide in turn two to claim the lead.

The win was Buckwold’s first Bear Ridge triumph is a year. His last victory came on August 3, 2017.

Ryan, of Chelsea, finished second for a career-best result while Richie Simmons finished third. Reigning Sportsman Modified champion Derek Graham made his first start since May and drove from a 13th place starting spot to finish fourth. Jordan Fornwalt completed the top-five finishers.

Second place point driver Kevin Chaffee narrowed the point lead with a sixth place finish while Tanner Siemons finished seventh. D.J. Robinson started 18th and finished ninth while point leader Robert Tucker completed the top-ten finishers.

Unofficially, Chaffee trimmed his 11-point deficit to Tucker to just six points. Tucker gained three points in his heat race over Chaffee, while Chaffee netted a eight more points in the feature.

Melvin Pierson earned the win in the Wells River Chevrolet Sportsman Coupe four-segment Madness event.

Buddy Welch snuck past Bobby Bell on the final turn of the 20-lap Weglarz Property Service Four Cylinder feature to claim the win.

Welch, of East Corinth, sat a few car length behind Bell as they ran under the white flag. Bell held his lead through turn three, but would slip and drift wide off of turn four and made near contact with the frontstretch wall. That allowed Welch to pounce at Bell lost momentum and slip by to claim the win by inches.

Bell, of St. Johnsbury, finished second with Jason Porter of Freeport, Maine third. Point leader Danny Doyle and defending champion Jesse Durkee completed the top-five finishers.

Unofficially, Doyle saw his point lead grow from six points to eight points as Porter moved into second over Durkee. Durkee fell to third, one point behind Porter, while Buddy Welch cut his point disadvantage from 22 points to 15 points behind Doyle. Bell tightened up his deficit in fifth as he went from 28 points down to 22 points back.

Ryan Christian came out on top of a back-and-forth battle with Kelly Miller Sr. to claim the win in the 25-lap C.A. Miller Limited Late Model feature.

It was Christian’s sixth straight Limited Late Model win and his ninth of the season.

The Canaan, N.H. driver worked the outside of Miller through the midway point of the event until Miller slipped up off of turn four and handed Christian the lead. The two had battled side-by-side for multiple laps before Christian took the lead for keeps.

Toby Stark of Canaan, N.H. finished second while Miller, of Johnson, settled for third. George Osgood Jr. and Walt Hammond completed the top-five finishers.

Jamie Glidden got past Mark Cole just before the midway point of the 20-lap Wingless Auto Club feature to claim the win.

It was the Campton, N.H. driver’s second Wingless Auto Club win at Bear Ridge this season.

Cole, of Lebanon, N.H., finished second with Sam Comeau third. Former Sprint Cars of New England winner Shawn Lawler and Doug Boucher completed the top-five finishers.

Riley Chaffee schooled his father in the 500cc Granite State Mini Sprint feature.

The younger Chaffee got to the inside of father Tom Chaffee as the duo came to the white flag in the 20-lap feature to take the lead and secure the win.

The elder Chaffee finished second with Joe Kemp third. Matt Calley and Matt Collins completed the top-five finishers.

Drew Eldridge of Chelmsford, Mass., won the 600cc Granite State Mini Sprint feature over Zach Herbert and Tony Shaw. Tyler Jones bounced back from a flip in turn four to finish while Kyle Pittman completed the top-five finishers.

Bear Ridge Speedway continues its 2018 season on Saturday, August 11 with Swenson Insurance Company night. It will be Topless Night for the Sportsman Modifieds, along with the Wingless Auto Club. Post time is set for 6:00pm.

Hebert Goes Back-to-Back over Payea in ACT WMMP Thriller

NORTH WOODSTOCK, N.H. — Jimmy Hebert’s first ACT Late Model Tour win in nearly five years a few weeks ago was nearly uneventful. His second win was much more so.

The Williamstown, Vt. driver came out on top of a back-and-forth battle with Scott Payea following the final restart with nine laps remaining to claim the win in the Autosaver Group 150 on Sunday afternoon at White Mountain Motorsports Park.

Hebert first took the lead from Cody Blake following a lap 110 restart. From there, Hebert would stay out in front as he worked through lapped traffic, even as ACT Late Model Tour point leader Scott Payea moved into the second position.

A lap 141 caution flag, however, would erase Hebert’s advantage and put the defending champion Payea to Hebert’s outside. Payea would nose ahead at the start and clear Hebert, but the two would make contact and hand the lead back to Hebert for lap 142. Payea would then change lanes and move to the inside of Hebert to take the lead on lap 143.

The two drivers would then make contact and Hebert would regain the lead on lap 144, before Payea used a similar move to regain the lead on lap 145. Hebert would make one final move as he moved to back to the inside of Payea to take the lead for keeps on lap 146.

Hebert would then steer clear of the thrilling battle to claim his second straight win.

“I’ve pretty much come (to the conclusion) that the points championship is done, so I was willing to throw it away and spin out to not finish second,” Hebert said. “We’d touch and I’d rough him up, and then he’d rough me up, and then I’d go right back at him.

“I knew if I could clear him and get one corner where we were faster. It was hard to get away from someone as you could do a side job to get in front of him, kind of like on dirt. But once we did, my dad said ‘clear by one, clear by two’ and I said ‘this is ours.’

“It was fun.”

Payea, of Milton, Vt., earned his ninth straight top-five place finish on the ACT Late Model Tour after he settled for second.

“We threw everything at (Hebert),” Payea said. “It was just whoever got to the bottom. We rooted each other up out of the groove a little bit, just enough to get by.

“I just couldn’t get back to him at the end. Hats off to (Hebert). It was just a fun race.”

For Hebert, the win his his fourth career ACT Late Model Tour triumph and his second in as many races since his previous most recent win came after five years.

“They say the first one is the hardest, but the third one was (for me),” Hebert said. “I hope it would open the flood gates.

“They said we started third (at Speedway 51) and everyone else started at the back. This week we started behind (Payea and Eddie MacDonald). We drove right around them all on the outside.

“I say they know we’re here.”

MacDonald, of Rowley, Mass., made a late race charge to move from fifth to third on the race’s final restart to claim the final spot on the podium. Cody Blake of Barre, Vt. led much of the 150-lap event to finish fourth overall while early race damage didn’t slow Corey Mason down much as he ran inside the top-five for much of the 150-lap event and finished fifth.

Quinny Welch drove back from an early race pit stop to finish sixth while White Mountain regular Stephen Donahue finished seventh. Polesitter Josh Masterson finished eighth while Oren Remick fought from an 18th place starting position to finish ninth. Seekonk Speedway regular Ryan Kuhn completed the top-ten finishers.

The ACT Late Model Tour will continue their 2018 season on Saturday, August 25 at Oxford Plains Speedway as part of the famed Oxford 250 weekend.

BARRE — Danny Doyle earned the largest win of his racing career on Sunday night at Thunder Road.

The Rochester driver topped nearly 100 entries in the Bolduc Metal Recycling Enduro 200 to claim the $3,000 winner’s prize.

The Bear Ridge Speedway Four Cylinder point leader found himself in the lead just before the the 150-lap mark in the 200-lap event.

From there, Doyle evaded the target on his back, including a late race spin, and steadily ran to the race win. Doyle finished one full lap ahead of second place finisher Richie Turner and was ahead by multiple laps at one point.

Former Airborne Park Speedway and Devil’s Bowl Speedway regular Turner, of Fairfax, finished second while occasional Bear Ridge Speedway driver Dennis Perry of East Corinth finished third.

Former Enduro winner Bill Davis of Monsoon, Mass. finished fourth with Plainfield’s Brandon Lawrence fifth. Robert Terry, Sean Ford, Brent Jarvis, Brian Ouellette, and Kyle Morris completed the unofficial top-ten finishers.

In tradition, the 200-lap event featured many thrilling moments. Louis Bunnell flips his car in turn three, but requested that safety crews allow him to continue. Unofficially, Bunnell finished 11th.

Thunder Road continues its regular season of racing on Thursday, August 9 with Cody Chevrolet Cadillac Night, which will feature the final race of the Myers Container Service Flying Tiger Triple Crown. Post time is 7:00pm.

Wild Last Lap Nets Martin Third Straight Series Win at Thunder Road

BARRE — Jeffrey Martin took his third straight Twin State Street Stock Series win on Sunday night at Thunder Road following a wild final lap.

The Barre driver came out on top of a last turn incident that started when Jamie Davis got into Tommy Smith as the two worked to pass a lapped car to their inside.

Smith would spin as he tried to block Davis’ momentum with the lapped car and the two made contact, third place Gary Mullen would drift wide to avoid Smith’s spinning car, and Martin would make contact with Scott Weston after contact with Stephen Martin, but slide past Mullen to claim the win.

Davis would cross the line ahead of Martin, but race officials deemed Davis to be part of the incident and stripped the win. Mullen was awarded the win on the track, but a scoring recheck named Martin the winner.

The win for Martin extended his Twin State Street Stock Series point lead to 29 points over Stephen Martin with one race left. His victory came just a few days after his No. 8 car was taken off the track in the “hammock” after he cut a right-rear tire and hit the turn four wall.

Mullen, of Tunbridge, was awarded second after the scoring check while Stephen Martin finished third. Kasey Beattie finished fourth while apparent fifth place finisher and Street Stock point leader Matthew Smith was disqualified in post-race technical inspection for an engine height violation. That handed the final spot in the top-five to Dean Switser Jr.

Tim Hunt was sixth while rookie Tyler Pepin finished seventh. Will Hennequin, Jacob Roy, and Bryan Wall completed the top-ten finishers.

The Allen Lumber Street Stocks will continue their 2018 season at Thunder Road on Thursday, August 9 with Cody Chevrolet Cadillac Night. Post time is set for 7:00pm.

Scarborough, Roberts Winners on Hot Night at Devil’s Bowl

Murray, Shepard, Chaves continue dominance

(From track press release)

WEST HAVEN — The dirt track racing action was as white-hot as the weather at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Sunday, August 5, and a pair of Joeys – Joey Scarborough and Joey Roberts – topped the list of winners.

Scarborough claimed his second NASCAR Whelen All-American Series win of the season on Friend Construction Night, Roberts took his third win, and other victors included Chris Murray, Kaleb Shepard, and Austin Chaves.

Scarborough won an outstanding 30-lap race for the Central Vermont Motorcycles Sportsman Modified division – one that saw the most outside-lane passing of the season and a wild crash on the frontstretch.  James Fadden and Jimmy Ryan put on a show in the early laps before Billy Lussier entered the picture, and the trio diced it up at the front to thrill the crowd.

Hometown favorite Lussier broke free and built a comfortable lead before a handful of caution flags tightened the field.  Meanwhile, Brandon, Vt., runner Scarborough drove up the far outside groove while often pushing his car three-wide, and sailed from 16th starting position to the front.  The pair engaged in a few crazy restarts that saw each take his shot in both grooves; Scarborough took the lead officially at lap 22 and was scored as the leader at the start-finish line every lap until the end, but Lussier nosed ahead several times momentarily in the final frames.  Lussier settled for second at the finish, setting a new career-best mark.

Scarborough’s twin brother, Jake, continued his recent run of strong finishes to score third place, while number-two point driver Tim LaDuc had a solid drive from 15th to finish fourth.  Ryan fell back in traffic and was nearly out of the top 10, but rebounded for fifth place.  Point leader Kenny Tremont Jr. finished sixth and Fadden was seventh, followed by Vince Quenneville Jr., Josh Sunn, and Justin Comes.

Tomas Kimball had a frightening crash on the frontstretch that saw his car pound the wall and then roll over; Kimball drew huge cheers when exited the demolished racer under his own power with a big wave and a smile for the crowd.

Unofficially, Tremont holds a slim eight-point lead on LaDuc (439-431) with Joey Scarborough third overall, only 33 points behind Tremont.

Joey Roberts picked the right night for his third win of the year in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Limited Sportsman division; the Fletcher, Vt., driver’s main sponsor is Friend Construction, and the race was the biggest event of the year for the class with three 10-lap scored segments.  The action was intense throughout the field all three rounds, with three-wide and even four-wide passing the rule rather than the exception.

Matt Bilodeau led flag-to-flag in the first 10-lap race, earning one point toward the overall three-segment tally; he beat Mike Ryan, Brent Warren, Travis Billington, and Roberts.  Mike Parodi won the second leg ahead of Dylan Rabtoy, Timmy Aldrighetti, Michael Wagner-Fitzgerald, and Tanner Forbes.

Parodi and teammate Billington were tied with 10 points each to led the field into the final segment, and no less than six other drivers sat within four points of them; in short, the race for the overall win was wide open.  As 16 year-old Montgomery Tremont had his coming-of-age party by leading all 10 laps in the last round, the overall standings changed every lap with incredible racing among the contenders.  When the checkered flag fell, it was Tremont, Roberts, Bilodeau, Adam Piper, and Wagner-Fitzgerald.

After three segments, Roberts, Bilodeau, and Billington were knotted in a three-way tie with a low total score of 16 points apiece; as the highest finisher among the trio in the last segment, Roberts got the tiebreaker and the overall victory.  Bilodeau was the overall runner-up for a career-best effort, while Billington took third overall.  Wagner-Fitzgerald and Warren completed the official top five.

Chris Murray of Fair Haven, Vt., continued his complete dismantling of the Super Stock division, picking up his seventh win in 11 races.  The defending champion had an easy time of it in the 20-lap feature race, needing only six laps to drive from ninth at the start to get the lead.

Josh Bussino ran in second place until former champion Joey Trudeau tracked him down and passed him in the final corner.  Another former champion, Kevin Elliott, finished fourth behind Bussino after a good fight with fifth-place finisher Garrett Given.

Kaleb Shepard of Vergennes, Vt., has decided that he likes victory lane, and visited for the fourth week in a row following the 20-lap feature for the Portland Glass Mini Stocks.  “The Snarve” drove from 15th place to take the lead from Johnny Bruno at lap 15, just before Bruno was turned around after contact with Mike Preston.

Shepard walked away from the field at the restart for the win.  Jake Barrows was a career-best second after a hard crash last week, while Tim Simonds drove a borrowed car to third place.  Point leader Chris Conroy finished fourth and Derrick Counter was fifth.  The top six drivers in the Mini Stock point standings were all summoned to post-race inspection for an engine teardown; Shepard, Conroy, Preston, Craig Kirby, and Shawn Moquin all passed with flying colors, but Mike Lique refused inspection and was disqualified.

Austin Chaves of Chester, Vt., made it back-to-back wins in the Friend Construction 500cc Mini Sprint division with a thorough stomping of the field in a 15-lap race; it was the third win of the year for the defending champion.  Colby Beinhaur, who is running a part-time schedule in 2018, finished second with a late charge.

Bandit Youth Mini Stock racer Evan Roberts, son of the Limited Sportsman winner, had a spectacular debut in the Mini Sprint division to drive from ninth to third.  Rookie Joel Belanger scored his career-best finish in fourth, and point leader Cody O’Brien came home fifth.

Devil’s Bowl Speedway is back on Sunday, August 12, as the Community College of Vermont presents a special “Twin 20s” event for the Sprint Cars of New England tour.  Also on the card are the Sportsman Modified, Limited Sportsman, Super Stock, and Mini Stock divisions.  Special event general admission is $15 for adults, $13 for seniors, $5 for teens (13-17), and free for kids age 12 and under.  Racing starts at 7:00 p.m.

BARRE — Joel Hodgdon fended off all challengers on Thursday night at Thunder Road.

The Craftsbury driver led all but one lap in the final leg of the three-race Triple Crown Series, but fended off a number of challengers along the way through nine race restarts in the Cody Chevrolet Cadillac 75 to claim the win and secure the Myers Container Service Flying Tiger Triple Crown championship.

“Those restarts had me pretty frustrated,” Hodgdon said. “I knew that once I could clear them I could walk away from them.

“But it was the clearing part that was getting me.”

After multiple attempts by outside polesitter Mike Martin, who led the first lap, and third place starter Joe Steffen to take the lead, Hodgdon’s fiercest challenge came from reigning champion Jason Woodard.

The two drivers would briefly run side-by-side for four restarts after lap 60 before Woodard would dip in behind Hodgdon and begin to pressure his rear bumper. One time, Woodard would make contact with Hodgdon off of turn four, but lifted and allowed the eventual race winner to gather his car before they continued their battle.

“I’m glad Jason (Woodard) let me collect it,” Hodgdon said. “That was class act. He got into me, but I’m glad there was a yellow after that.

“He was at my right rear tire and I was getting wicked loose. (But) they weren’t getting by me tonight.”

The Myers Container Service Triple Crown Series was the first championship of any kind for Hodgdon and his family team, which was celebrated in grand style by his father, Paul, who climbed through the passenger side window in victory lane to congratulate his son.

“He was an animal,” Hodgdon joked. “He crawled in the race car, I don’t know what he was doing. He’s pretty excited.

“I’m real excited. It’s pretty cool.”

Unofficially, Hodgdon extended his point lead in the regular season Lenny’s Shoe & Apparel Flying Tiger division championship standings to 89 points over Steffen with just three races left.

Waterbury Center driver Woodard, in just his fourth start this season after an early season suspension, finished second for his best finish this season.

Hometown driver Cameron Ouellette made a thrilling late race three-wide move on Steffen and Martin to claim the third spot while the 2002 Flying Tiger champion Steffen settled for fourth. Martin completed the top-five finishers.

Robert Gordon, rookies Cooper Bouchard and Kelsea Woodard, Kyle Streeter, and veteran driver Dwayne Lanphear finished sixth through tenth, unofficially.

Thunder Road will continue its 2018 season on Thursday, August 16 with Premium Mortgage Night. Post time is 7:00pm.

Gravel Snags Elusive First Thunder Road Late Model Win

Martin pads Street Stock point lead with win

BARRE — Marcel Gravel doesn’t have to wait any longer for his first Thunder Road Late Model win.

The Wolcott driver led all 50 laps on Thursday night to capture his long awaited first career Maplewood/Irving Oil Late Model win.

“I came across the finish line and I pushed the (push-to-talk radio) button and I was just screaming,” Gravel said. “It overcomes you so fast. And once you get the victory lap completed, you’ve calmed down.

“But I’ve been racing here since I was seven years old. I ran my first go-kart race and I remembered standing on the frontstretch with my parents after we won a race. When you think back to those days, this is the goal.”

Gravel started from the pole position and quickly jumped out to the race lead over second place starter Tyler Cahoon. Cahoon spent the next 50 laps stalking Gravel, but Gravel stayed out in front to claim the win.

“I knew that Tyler Cahoon is one of cleaner guys (to race),” Gravel said. “I bet I didn’t look in the mirror three times. He’s not going to run you over. He’s not going push you out of the way. If you make a mistake, he’s going to jump on it. I knew he was there and I was mindful of what was going on.

“But my dad has been doing a fantastic job for me as a spotter. I make him talk more than I think he wants to talk. I knew what was going on the whole time.”

Gravel has been close many times in his young Late Model career to claim his first win. He nearly pulled off an upset win in the Governor’s Cup one year ago and was leading the Mid-Season Championship event two weeks ago until a late caution and subsequent flat right-front tire ended his chances.

“It’s huge. It’s more of a sigh of relief,” Gravel said. “We’ve been closing to winning big races, and the Governor’s Cup (last year) was one we contended for.

“I think this isn’t going to be the last one. We’ve shown we can run with these guys, we’ve just been having an off year. We do it all ourselves and my dad sets this (car) up. We don’t have any outside help.”

The first career win for Gravel puts him and his father, Marcel D., as the eighth pair of father-son winners in Thunder Road Late Model history.

“It feels amazing,” Gravel said. “We’ve been having a really bad year, but now I’ll be happy with the 2018 season knowing that we got the first (win).

“It’s fantastic. It’s everything I thought it was going to be, probably, plus a little bit.”

Cahoon, of St. Johnsbury, settled for second for his best finish of the season.

“It’s been a hard year,” Cahoon said in victory lane. “It’s been a long year. But that’s all behind us and things are going forward. We’re looking forward to an end of the year run.”

Stephen Donahue of Graniteville just beat out Jason Corliss for third at the line as Corliss made a late charge to catch the three leaders. Corliss finished fourth as he attempted to steal third from Donahue while Eric Chase completed the top-five finishers.

Scott Dragon passed point leader Trampas Demers late to finish sixth while Demers settled for seventh. Cody Blake, Christopher Pelkey, and Matt White finished eighth, ninth, and tenth, respectively.

Unofficially, Demers kept his 13-point advantage over Dragon with his better heat race result, while Corliss shaved two points off his deficit and sits 18 points back of Demers. The Late Model division has two races left to their season.

Stephen Martin took a big step toward an improbable championship after he claimed the win in the 25-lap Allen Lumber Street Stock feature.

The Craftsbury driver took the lead from rookie driver Juan Marshall on a lap 21 restart to claim the win.

The win for Martin was his second career win. Unofficially, he will leave 40-point advantage over second place.

Marshall, of Pittsfield, had taken the lead from Will Hennequin on lap 19 when Hennequin’s car shut down while leading, but settled for second after being passed by eventual winner Martin. Sunday’s Twin State Street Stock Series winner Jeffrey Martin finished third with defending champion Jamie Davis fourth and Gary Mullen fifth.

Dean Swister Jr., Jacob Roy, Trevor Rossi, Logan Powers, and first-time starter Kyle Campbell finished sixth through tenth, unofficially.

Recent point leader Matthew Smith had worked his way through the field, but suffered right rear suspension problems on lap 21 that saw his tire go flying into the tree off of turn two. Smith was okay, but retired from the event.

Unofficially, Jeffrey Martin moved into the second position in points with Smith third, 43 points back of the lead. Tim Hunt and Logan Powers complete the unofficial top-five.

Thunder Road continues its 2018 season on Thursday, August 16 with Premium Mortgage night. Post time is 7:00pm.

Robinson Shakes Off Wreck to Win at Bear Ridge

Kingsbury claims third Coupe win; Miller holds off Porter for Four Cylinder triumph

–by T.J. Ingerson (@TJIngerson)
VMM Editor

BRADFORD — D.J. Robinson didn’t let a part-time 2018 schedule slow him down on Saturday night at Bear Ridge Speedway.

In just his eighth start this season, the Sharon driver shook off his involvement in a massive lap ten pileup on the backstretch that collected over half of the 18-car field to take the lead just six laps later and claimed his first win of the season.

The win for Robinson was his first since June, 2017.

“We got a little bit lucky there with that pileup on the backstretch,” Robinson said. “The car was working real well on the outside.”

Robinson started the Sabil & Sons DIRTcar Sportsman Modified 40-lap Swenson Insurance-sponsored feature event from the 14th position and had cracked into the top-ten by a lap nine restart.

As the field exited off of turn two on the tenth lap, the field would stack up from the fifth position and collected nearly every car from there on the backstretch, which include top point drivers Robert Tucker and Kevin Chaffee.

Robinson left the scene with marginal damage and would restart in the fifth position. From there, Robinson made quick work around the outside into the second position by lap 15 before he ran to the outside of race leader Mike Ryan to claim the lead on lap 16.

From there, Robinson would be forced to hold off second place point driver Chaffee through seven race restarts — six of those with point leader Tucker in third — to claim the win.

Chaffee would challenge Robinson on the inside briefly after each restart, but Robinson was able to use the topside of the quarter-mile clay oval to pull away. The hometown driver would finish second, but unofficially take over the point lead.

“I could get to (Robinson),” Chaffee said, “but I just didn’t have anything for him.”

Tucker, of Bradford, settled for third after a stiff challenge from Jordan Fornwalt, who settled for fourth. Matt Lashua completed the top-five finishers.

Defending champion Derek Graham battled back from apparent significant damage in the lap 10 incident to finish sixth while Ryan Christian finished seventh. Terry Williams hopped a ride in an Adam Pierson-piloted Modified after a heat race incident to finish eighth with Steven Flint ninth. Richie Simmons completed the top-ten finishers in tenth.

Unofficially, Chaffee will take a one-point advantage over Tucker with just five point-counting races remaining.

Tad Kingsbury earned his third Wells River Chevrolet Sportsman Coupe feature in their 30-lap event.

The Corinth driver slipped up the inside past Bob Kilburn and Kevin Dickinson to go from third to first in just under two laps to take the lead for keeps on lap eight. From there, Kingsbury would hold off challenges from Earl Maxham and Gene Pierson Jr. through three race restarts to claim the checkered flag.

Pierson, of East Corinth, finished second with Todd Hayward third. Tanner Siemons and point leader Melvin Pierson finished fourth and fifth, respectively, while Dickinson and Maxham finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Jason Horniak battled back from a lap 12 flip to finish eighth while Matt Ellsworth and Chris LaForest completed the top-ten finishers.

Unofficially, Melvin Pierson extended his point lead to 50 points over Chris LaForest with five point counting races remaining.

Will Hull rode to his fourth Laquerre’s Sport USAC Dirt Midget Association win of the season in their 25-lap feature.

The Plainfield driver started third and quickly moved into the second position by lap five. A restart on that same lap when point leader Jason Goff spun in turn one saw Hull restart second and ran past race leader Joe Krawiec by turn three.

Warren’s Adam Whitney finished second while most recent feature winner Derek O’Hearn drove from an 11th place starting position to finish third. Krawiec settled for fourth while second place point driver Seth Carlson completed the top-five finishers.

Goff bounced back from another spin to finish sixth with Justin Phillips seventh. Jeff Horn, Bobby White, and Randy Higginson completed the top-ten finishers.

Unofficially, Goff will carry a five-point advantage into the Midgets’ race on Friday, August 17 at Albany-Saratoga Speedway.

Kelly Miller Jr. held off Jason Porter over the second half of the 20-lap Weglarz Property Service Four Cylinder to claim his first win of the season.

The Johnson driver kept the second place point driver Porter at bay over the course of the second half of the event. Miller had sealed the bottom groove of the race track and forced Porter to search for a way around Miller using the outside.

Porter, of Freeport, Maine, settled for second with Bobby Bell third. Point leader Danny Doyle and rookie Garrett Brown completed the top-five finishers.

Unofficially, Doyle will see his point lead be cut to just one point over Porter with just five races remaining.

Ryan Christian netted his tenth C.A. Miller Limited Late Model win in their 20-lap feature.

It was the Canaan, N.H. driver’s seventh straight victory in the division.

The win, however, did not come easy for Christian as he had to make a late pass on race leader John Neddo. Christian worked to Neddo’s inside on lap 16 and took the lead for keeps on lap 18.

Neddo, of Barre, finished second while Walt Hammond Jr. finished third. Kelly Miller Sr. and Nicholas Longley completed the top-five finishers.

Sam Comeau of Hebron, N.H. won the 25-lap Wingless Auto Club feature over Jamie Glidden, Mark Cole, Doug McPhail, and Wade Prentice.

Bear Ridge Speedway continues its 2018 season on Saturday, August 18 on Sabil & Sons Old Timers Night. The Sprint Cars of New England will compete at the quarter-mile oval. Post time is 6:00pm.

Hackel, Douville Sizzle in Sprint Car Twin 20s at Devil’s Bowl

Scarborough continues hot streak in Sportsman Modifieds

(From track press release)

WEST HAVEN — Bobby Hackel and Danny Douville rocked the house at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Sunday, August 12, as the Sprint Cars of New England (SCoNE) tour invaded Community College of Vermont Night for a special Twin 20s event that produced a pair of exciting finishes. Meanwhile, in NASCAR Whelen All-American Series action, Joey Scarborough continued his hot streak and Brent Warren, Joey Trudeau, Johnny Bruno, and Jessica Moquin also visited victory lane.

Former Devil’s Bowl Sportsman Modified champion Hackel added another chapter to his “Little Engine That Could” story, winning the first 20-lap SCoNE event with an incredible pass on the last lap. Hackel’s car competes against SCoNE’s regular 360 cubic-inch engines with a smaller 305 motor which lacks horsepower but has sharper handling in the corners.

Hackel tracked down leader Will Hull in heavy lapped traffic and darted underneath him in Turn 2, completing the pass as the checkered flag waved. Lacey Hanson came home in third place followed by Clay Dow and Adam Pierson, who made a surprise appearance with the Sprint Cars.

The second race was also decided late in the going when former series champion Danny Douville of Bridgewater, N.H., swept to the outside lane to drive from third to first after a restart with three laps remaining, snookering leader Peter Dance. Once again, Hackel drove up the inside lane, stealing second place in the final corner. Matt Hoyt had a solid run to take third ahead of Hull and SCoNE newcomer Dance.

Douville will lead Hull in the Devil’s Bowl Sprint Car track championship standings by just two points, 188-186, entering the division’s final race of the season on September 2.

Joey Scarborough of Brandon, Vt., put on an impressive romp on the outside in the 30-lap feature for the Central Vermont Motorcycles Sportsman Modified division, winning for the third time in the last four races. Veteran Brian Whittemore looked to be headed to victory lane, but the hard-charging Scarborough came from 20th on the starting grid to blow past a battle between Whittemore and Billy Lussier with just four laps remaining.

Whittemore had his first podium finish of the year in second place, with Lussier third. Jimmy Ryan ran strong all night for fourth place with Jake Scarborough – the winner’s twin brother – in fifth. Kenny Tremont Jr. hung in for sixth, followed by top rookie Tanner Siemons, Ron Proctor, Josh Sunn, and rookie Marty Kelly III.

With the win, Scarborough moved into a second-place tie in the point standings with Tim LaDuc, and both drivers trail Tremont by 25 points, 482-457.

Brent Warren of Salisbury, Vt., ran to his third win of the season in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Limited Sportsman feature. Young guns Montgomery Tremont and Tanner Forbes took turns leading before Warren took over 11 laps in. Paolo Pascarella made a strong challenge in the final laps, but Warren held him off. Joey Roberts made a late drive through traffic to finish third, while Tremont scored a career-best effort in fourth place. R.J. Germain completed the top five.

The Limited Sportsman race was ended after 17 of 20 laps were completed due to time constraints; the finish is under review and is considered unofficial.

Joey Trudeau earned his first Super Stock win of the season in a 20-lapper. Top drivers Chris Murray and Scott FitzGerald each had a rough outing, which opened the door for everyone else; Trudeau led the early part of the race before Kevin Elliott took over, but Elliott and Murray came together to bring out a yellow flag. Hague, N.Y., racer Trudeau slipped back into the lead and cruised to the checkered flag. Curtis Condon was the runner-up over Josh Bussino, Lou Gancarz, and rookie Andrew FitzGerald.

In spite of a wreck that knocked his car out of the race, Murray holds a commanding 76-point lead in the championship standings over Condon, 648-572.

Fifteen year-old Johnny Bruno of Castleton, Vt., was a first-time winner in the Portland Glass Mini Stock division, taking a 15-lap race. The sophomore driver led every lap, but was under attack first from Shawn Moquin and later from Zach Wood and Kaleb Shepard. Wood finished second for his best run of the year, and Shepard took third driving a car borrowed from Hunter Given. Moquin finished fourth with Mike Lique fifth.

Chris Conroy was uninjured in a spectacular flip which destroyed his car and dropped him from the championship point lead; Shepard jumped ahead for the first time, with a 10-point edge on Conroy, 565-555.

Milton, Vt.’s Jessica Moquin, Shawn’s better half, scored her first win in the Ladies Mini Stock division after an intense race with Morgan Ballard, who came inches from hitting the wall as she tried to steal the win in the final lap. Jill Simonds finished third ahead of Mary Gardner and Emily Cram.

Devil’s Bowl Speedway’s next event is on Sunday, August 19, as the Fabian Earth Moving presents the third annual Charlie LaDuc Memorial 54 for the Sportsman Modifieds. Also on the card are the Limited Sportsman, Super Stock, Mini Stock, and 500cc Mini Sprint divisions, the Bandit Youth Mini Stocks, and pit area tours at intermission. General admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, $5 for teens (13-17), and free for kids age 12 and under. Racing starts at 7:00 p.m.

Devil’s Bowl Speedway is located on Route 22A in West Haven, Vt., four miles north of U.S. Route 4, Exit 2, and just 20 minutes from Rutland, Vt. Payea, Sweet Lead ACT U.S. Stars to Chaudiere

(From series press release)

WATERBURY – Some of the biggest stars of the American-Canadian Tour (ACT) will be heading north of the border this Saturday, August 18. The Bacon Bowl 200 at Vallée-Jct., QC’s Autodrome Chaudiere is shaping up to be the biggest Late Model event of the year in Quebec and is expected to attract racers from throughout the province as well as the northeastern United States.

Colchester, VT’s Scott Payea and Barre, VT’s Nick Sweet, the two most recent ACT Late Model Tour champions, are among those who have committed to the high-profile event. The 200-lap affair will pay $10,000 CAD to the winner. With nearly $40,000 CAD in posted purse and point fund awards, it will be one of the richest events of the year for ACT-type Late Models.

Payea has had a superb season on U.S. soil with two wins and six podium finishes driving for RPM Motorsports. This record has given him a 41-point lead in the ACT Late Model Tour standings. Sweet has run a partial schedule in 2018, but finished third in the Summer Showdown Series opener at Oxford Plains Speedway. He will pilot a car from the Mad Dog Motorsports stable that Kyle Busch raced at Thunder Road in 2017.

“It’s going to be nice to get back in the seat,” Sweet said. “It’s a unique race that pays well. Chaudiere is a place that’s I’ve never had outstanding success at, but I like a challenge, and we’ll see if we can get in the show and have a good time.”

Payea and Sweet will be joined by a few other U.S. drivers in making the trek to Vallée-Jct. ACT rookie Christopher Pelkey of Barre, VT is another racer who has committed to the event. Pelkey has shown steady improvement throughout the season and also sits sixth in Thunder Road Late Model points. Thunder Road regular Mike Foster has also stated he will be heading to Chaudiere.

In addition to sporting a sizeable purse, the Bacon Bowl is also the finale of both the 2018 ACT Triple Crown and the Chaudiere Triple Crown. All drivers who make the trip to Chaudiere will combine their two best ACT Late Model Tour finishes so far this season with their finish in Saturday’s main event.

The top drivers in the final Triple Crown standings will receive cash bonuses. This includes a $2,000 USD award to the champion. Payea currently is tied for the ACT Triple Crown lead with Jimmy Hebert, while Sweet sits fourth in the standings, 14 points behind Payea.

The U.S. contingent will join the best Quebec racers in chasing the $10,000 CAD top prize. Multi-time ACT champion Patrick Laperle of St-Denis, QC leads the Chaudiere Triple Crown standings and will go for the title on Saturday. Former Série ACT champions Karl Allard and Dany Trépanier are also in the top-5 in Chaudiere Triple Crown points. The track’s weekly Late Model class is expected to be out in force as well.

Qualifying for the Bacon Bowl 200 gets underway at 4:00pm on Saturday, August 18 with group time trials for the ACT Late Models. Heat races for all divisions begin at 5:00pm. The Late Models will be joined by the NASCAR Sport Compact Amateur, Slingshot, and Vintage divisions. The pits open at 12:00pm and the front gates open at 2:00pm. Admission is $42 CAD (appx. $32 USD) for adults and free for kids ages 17 and under.

For more information, contact the ACT offices at (802) 244-6963, media@acttour.com, or visit www.acttour.com or www.autodromechaudiere.com.

Hallstrom Earns First Career Thunder Road Win

Austin beats Lanphear for Tiger win; Switser inherits Street Stock victory

–by T.J. Ingerson (@TJIngerson)
VMM Editor

BARRE — Evan Hallstrom used misfortune from one week ago to help him net his first career Thunder Road Late Model win on Thursday night.

The Northfield driver led all 50 laps from the pole position and used fresher tires than the competition to run to career win number one.

“This means a lot,” Hallstrom said. “My parents put their heart and soul into this. They started this about ten or 11 years ago when I was about four or five (years old).

“It just feels great to be in victory lane. I’m just for a loss of words.”

Hallstrom failed to start the feature event one week ago, which let him have fresher tires than his competition. With that advantage, the 16-year-old Hallstrom was forced to hold his lead through three race restarts, including two with recent feature winner Boomer Morris to his outside.

“I knew that had a pretty good car,” Hallstrom said. “I was pretty confident that I could drive away from (Morris) with it.

“I didn’t let it bother me too much. I just ran my race and had a hell of a time.”

Morris, of Barre, settled for second while Stephen Donahue finished third. Scott Dragon took control of the point lead with a fourth place finish while third place point driver Jason Corliss finished fifth.

Mike Bailey, Cody Blake, Marcel Gravel, Christopher Pelkey, and Matt White completed the top-ten finishers.

Point leader Trampas Demers suffered a flat left-front tire after contact with Pelkey on lap 12. He returned to the track, but was unable to make his way through the field and finished 14th.

Unofficially, Dragon will lead by nine points over Jason Corliss with one race remaining. Demers will sit in third, ten markers back of Dragon.

Tyler Austin came out on top of a back-and-forth battle with Brandon Lanphear to win the 40-lap Lenny’s Shoe & Apparel Flying Tiger feature.

The two drivers first locked horns following a lap 21 restart after Lanphear took the lead from Mike MacAskill following a lap 16 restart and Austin followed suit.

Austin would take the lead on the restart, but Lanphear would fight back on the outside. A lap 25 restart would reverse the roles and put Austin on the inside, but Austin would pull away.

Lanphear, however, would charge back on the outside and retake the lead on lap 32, but Austin kept pace on the inside to regain the lead on lap 34. The two drivers would continue their door-to-door battle until Austin steered clear on lap 38 and ran to the race win.

“This is just awesome,” Austin said.

Lanphear, of Morrisville, held off point leader Joel Hodgdon in the closing laps to finish second.

“We used up all the car we had,” Lanphear said. “I don’t think you can have better short track racing than battling side-by-side for the lead.”

Hodgdon, of Craftsbury, extended his point lead with a third place finish while Mike Martin finished fourth. Freshman pilot Kevin Streeter completed the top-five finishers.

Rookie Kelsea Woodard, Robert Gordon, Joe Steffen, defending champion Jason Woodard, and Brett Wood finished sixth through tenth, unofficially.

Patrick Tibbetts led all 25 laps to claim the win in the Allen Lumber Street Stock feature, but was disqualified in post-race technical inspection.

The Barre driver was disqualified for a wheel violation. That handed the win to on-track runner-up Dean Switser Jr.

On the track, Tibbetts started on the pole position and quickly ran out to a big lead from outside polesitter Paco Marshall. Tibbetts’ lead was erased by a lap 15 caution flag, but the eventual winner would hold off youngster Kasey Beattie and veteran Dean Switser Jr. to claim the win.

Switser picked up his first win of the year after a rough-and-tumble season that has seen the Lyndonville driver upside down.

All-time Street Stock wins leader Tommy Smith finished second while apparent fourth-place finisher Jamie Davis was disqualified, too, in post-race technical inspection. That moved point leader Stephen Martin to third to extend his point lead. Beattie and Will Hennequin completed the top-five finishers.

Bryan Wall, Jeff Martin, Logan Powers, Gary Mullen, and Matthew Smith finished sixth through tenth, unofficially.

Unofficially, Stephen Martin extended his point lead to 50 points over Jeff Martin with just two races left on the Street Stock point schedule.

Kyle MacAskill of Williamstown claimed the win in the 20-lap Burnett Scrap Metals Road Warrior feature. Eric Chase and Sean McCarthy finished second and third while Frank Putney and Rodney Campbell completed the top-five finishers.

Thunder Road’s Thursday night season will conclude on August 23 with Jet Service Envelope/Accura Printing night. Thunder Road will crown its champion in the Late Model division while the fans of Thunder Road can take to the track with Run-What-U-Brung. Post time is 7:00pm.

Hull Rolls to Midget win at Albany-Saratoga

MALTA, N.Y. — Will Hull likely enjoyed the most recent visit to Albany-Saratoga Speedway much more than his previous one.

The Plainfield, Vt. driver, who flipped on the frontstretch in the first USAC Dirt Midget Association event at Albany-Saratoga Speedway in June, claimed the win in the division’s 20-lap event on Friday at the four-tenths mile oval.

Hull started midway through the field and ran down race leader Derek O’Hearn shortly before midway point of the feature. From there, Hull opened a comfortable lead back to O’Hearn to cruise to thew in.

O’Hearn, of Bristol, N.H., settled for second after he led the first eight laps of the event. O’Hearn grabbed the lead just after the first turn in a darring three-wide, up-the-middle move past polesitter Brandon Emerson and second place Justin Phillips.

USAC Dirt Midget Association point leader Jason Goff stretched his point lead with a third place finish while Adam Whitney and former Midget champion Joe Krawiec completed the top-five finishers.

Second place point driver Seth Carlson finished sixth after he fell off the pace in the closing laps. Randy Higginson, David Moniz, Emerson, and Phillips completed the top-ten finishers.

The USAC Dirt Midget Association will continue their 2018 season at their “home” track, Bear Ridge Speedway, on Saturday, August 25.

BRADFORD — Jake Williams led only one lap on Saturday night at Bear Ridge Speedway, but it was the most important lap.

The Center Tuftonboro, N.H. driver snuck past race leader Mike Kondrat on the final lap to claim his first Sprint Cars of New England win of the season in the Sabil & Sons-sponsored 25-lap feature event.

The win for Williams was his first Sprint Cars of New England feature win in nearly one year. His last win came at Bear Ridge on August 19.

Kondrat ran out to the early race lead over Williams, but Williams was able to close the gap in the late stages of the race when Kondrat ran into lapped traffic. Williams jumped to the topside and was able to work past Kondrat on the final lap.

Kondrat, of Freedom, N.H., posted his best Sprint Cars of New England race to date this season with a runner-up finish. Luke Greenwood of Hudson, N.H. finished third while former Sprint Cars of New England champion Dan Douville finished fourth. Series point leader Will Hull completed the top-five finishers.

Lacey Hanson, Jordan Fornwalt, Dennis McLeod, Troy Comeau, and Christine Boesch finished sixth through tenth, unofficially.

The Sprint Cars of New England will continue their 2018 season Saturday, September 1 at Bear Ridge Speedway and Sunday, September 2 at Devil’s Bowl Speedway.

Siemons nets second Coupe win; Neddo stops Christian in Late Models

BRADFORD — Matt Lashua rolled to his second win of the season on Saturday night at Bear Ridge Speedway.

The Canaan, N.H. driver jumped out in front on lap 26 of the 40-lap Sabil & Sons DIRTcar Sportsman Modified feature and kept defending champion Derek Graham behind him to claim the win.

Lashua took the lead from Mike Dunn, who had claimed his stake in the top spot just six laps earlier from Mike Ryan.

Graham, of Woodsville, N.H., settled for second while North Haverhill, N.H. driver Dunn finished third. Hometown drivers Jordan Fornwalt and Richie Simmons completed the top-five finishers.

Todd Buckwold, second place point driver Robert Tucker, point leader Kevin Chaffee, Ryan Christian, and Terry Williams finished sixth through tenth, unofficially.

Like Lashua, Tanner Siemons collected his second checkered flag of the season in the 30-lap Wells River Chevrolet Sportsman Coupes.

The Orford, N.H. youngster took the lead from Bob Kilburn in the late stages of the race to run to his fourth career win.

Kilburn, of Fair Haven, held on for second with former champion Jason Horniak third. Kevin Dickinson and Jason Colbeth finished fourth and fifth, while Earl Maxham, Josh Harrington, Melvin Pierson, Tad Kingsbury, and Todd Hayward completed the top-ten finishers.

John Needo of Barre claimed the win in the 20-lap C.A. Miller Limited Late Model feature after he took the lead from Kelly Miller Sr. midway through the event after a spirited battle.

The win for Neddo was his first of the season and snapped a six-race win streak for point leader Ryan Christian, who finished second. Miller settled for third with Walter Hammond fourth and Matt Lashua fifth.

Buddy Welch bounced back from a wreck one week ago to claim the win in the 20-lap Weglarz Property Service Four Cylinder feature.

The East Corinth driver took the lead from rookie driver Owen Carbee with five laps remaining to net his fourth win of the season.

Carbee, of South Ryegate, finished second while defending champion Jesse Durkee completed the podium. Bobby Bell and rookie Cody Copeland finished fourth and fifth, respectively, while sixth through tenth went to Kelly Miller Jr., Danny Doyle, Garrett Brown, Charlie Lakin, and Peter Burt.

Jake Williams of Center Tuftonboro, N.H. won the 25-lap Sprint Cars of New England event over Mike Kondrat and Luke Greenwood.

Bear Ridge Speedway continues its 2018 season on Saturday, August 25 with Dead River Company night and a visit from the USAC Dirt Midget Association and the Granite State Mini Sprints. Post time is set for 6:00pm.

VALLEE-JONCTION, Quebec — Jonathan Bouvrette earned the largest win of his racing career on Saturday night at Autodrome Chaudiere.

The Blainville, Quebec driver pocketed $10,000 as he claimed the win in the Bacon Bowl 200.

Bouvrette took the lead from Chaudiere NASCAR Late Model point leader Samuel Charland on lap 81 of the 200-lap event. From there, Bouvrette never surrendered the top spot and was able to comfortably ahead of NASCAR Xfinity Series driver and former Serie ACT Quebec champion Alex Labbe.

Labbe, of St-Albert, finished second after he hopped a ride in the No. 48 Larue Motorsports entry while Super Late Model star Raphael Lessard was a late substitute for Marco Bilodeau and drove from a last place starting spot to finish third.

Charland, who took the lead from Jean-Francois Dery just ten laps before he surrendered it to Bouvrette, settled for fourth and claimed the Chaudiere Triple Crown championship. ACT Late Model Tour point leader Scott Payea finished fifth and earned the American-Canadian Tour portion of the Triple Crown championship.

Multi-time Serie ACT Quebec champion Patrick Laperle finished sixth after he ran from the back following an early race pit spot while Karl Allard rallied from a spin while battling for the lead with Dery just after the one-third mark in event to finish seventh. Dany Trepanier finished eighth while Vermont driver Nick Sweet finished ninth. Steve Cote completed the top-ten finishers.

The ACT Late Model Tour will continue their 2018 season on Saturday, August 25 at Oxford Plains Speedway as part of the 45th Annual Clark’s Scrap Metals Oxford 250 weekend. The NASCAR Late Models at Autodrome Chaudiere will continue their NASCAR Whelen All-American Series season on Sunday, August 26.

Tremont Back on Top with Big Win at Devil’s Bowl

Fresh faces visit victory lane in support classes

(From track press release)

WEST HAVEN — Kenny Tremont Jr. is accustomed to being up front at Devil’s Bowl Speedway, and the eight-time track champion has led the point standings at the Vermont track for most of the summer.  This season has been different, though, and Tremont has not dominated like he has in past years, but he took a big step toward getting back on the right track with a victory in the Charlie LaDuc Memorial “Ol’ Reliable” 54 on Sunday, August 19.

Other drivers in victory lane on Fabian Earth Moving Night included Adam Piper, Kevin Elliott, and Shawn McPhee – each of whom scored his first win of the year – and repeat winners Kaleb Shepard and Evan Roberts.

West Sand Lake, N.Y., driver Tremont scored in the 54-lap, $1,500-to-win special event for the Central Vermont Motorcycles Sportsman Modified division in NASCAR Whelen All-American Series action.  Rookie drivers had an outstanding night, topped by Jeff Washburn’s effort that saw him lead the first 32 laps.  He was overtaken by Tim LaDuc, who was gunning for the victory in his father’s memorial race, but LaDuc had company with Jimmy Ryan, Joey Scarborough, Tremont, James Fadden, rookie Tanner Siemons, and others.

Ryan took over at lap 39 and held the position despite constant pressure.  The race changed dramatically with just three laps left, though, when a big pileup on the frontstretch eliminated LaDuc and Siemons from contention.  Ryan and Tremont restarted on the front row together and Ryan led the first lap after the restart, but Tremont blasted by on the outside and sailed to the win – his first top-five finish since July 15.

Scarborough continued his hot streak by getting past Ryan for the runner-up finish, with Ryan and Fadden next in line.  Josh Sunn crossed the finish line in fifth place but his car did not pass post-race inspection and he was disqualified, bumping Vince Quenneville Jr. up to fifth.  Brian Whittemore, Justin Comes, Billy Lussier, Allan Hammond, and rookie Marty Kelly III completed the official top 10.

Tremont’s victory gives him a 29-point lead in the championship standings over Scarborough, 535-506.

Adam Piper of Leicester, Vt., wound up celebrating the first O’Reilly Auto Parts Limited Sportsman win of his career.  Piper led 15 of the race’s 20 laps before Travis Billington slipped by with three circuits remaining, but Billington’s car did not pass post-race technical inspection.  Joey Roberts inherited second, followed by Paolo Pascarella, Brent Warren, and R.J. Germain.  The point standings were shaken up, and Warren now finds himself up front with a narrow two-point edge on Pascarella, 659-657.

Rutland, Vt., veteran Kevin Elliott won an exciting 20-lap race for the Super Stock division, which saw several intense battles for the lead.  Eliott led early before Josh Bussino and Jim McKiernan entered the picture, and the trio swapped the top spot four times in the final seven laps.  The win was the first for Elliott since Late Model score on asphalt in 2012, and it was his first win on dirt in 10 years.  Point leader Chris Murray struggled for the second straight race and finished 14th, but maintains a healthy 67-point cushion (673-606) on both Bussino and Curtis Condon, who are tied for second place.

Kaleb Shepard of Vergennes, Vt., returned to the winner’s circle in the Portland Glass Mini Stock division, copping his fifth win of the season.  Shepard and good friend Mike Preston battled side-by-side for the lead for much of the 15-lap race before Preston dropped out with mechanical trouble.  Shawn Moquin gave Shepard a run for the win but settled for second place ahead of Johnny Bruno, rookie Craig Kirby, and Matt Monaghan.  Shepard stretched his point lead over Chris Conroy – who finished seventh in the race – to 24 points, 618-594.

Shawn McPhee of Rutland, Vt., scored a popular career-first win in the 15-lap feature race for the Friend Construction 500cc Mini Sprint division.  The 13 year-old rookie led every lap and left the field way behind.  Rookies swept the podium positions, with Samantha Mulready and Kevin Smith finishing behind McPhee.  Sophomore driver Colby Beinhaur was fourth, and another rookie, Dakota Green, took fifth.  Point leader Cody O’Brien dropped out with engine trouble, which tightened the championship race; he now leads defending champion Austin Chaves by just 11 points, 447-436.

Evan Roberts of Fletcher, Vt., scored his third win in as many tries in the Bandit Youth Mini Stock division.  Twelve year-old Roberts led all eight laps, outdistancing a pair of 10 year-olds for the win.  Tommy Given finished second, with first-time racer Eric Paige third.  Allan Hammond Jr. and Nathan Desabrais finished fourth and fifth.
